Messages and chats

Drafts, editing, pins, formatting and scheduled messages.

Direct and group chats

Open Messages and choose a person, group chat or channel. A typing indicator appears while someone enters text. In groups it shows the names of people typing and disappears shortly after they stop.

Unfinished text stays in its own chat and appears as “Draft: …” in the list. Drafts are saved on the server, so you see them on all your devices. When opening a conversation, the “Unread messages” separator marks new messages and the chat scrolls to the first one. Once you have read to the end or replied, the separator disappears.

Calls in conversation history

After a call ends, the conversation shows an outgoing call for the caller, an incoming call for the recipient, or a missed call when unanswered. Declined calls have a separate status. Below the title, an arrow shows the call duration, “No answer” or the time of a missed call. The phone button on the right of the card calls the person back.

Previously completed calls also appear at their original date without increasing the unread count.

The paperclip in a direct chat

The attachment menu contains:

  • Photo or video: choose from your device, preview and add a caption;
  • Document: send the original as a file;
  • Checklist: a title and up to 50 tasks, one per line; both participants can mark tasks complete;
  • Article: a title and up to 20,000 characters of text, expanded with Read article;
  • Location: choose a point on the map;
  • Music: choose a track from your library or device.

Checklists and articles are sent only to this conversation.

Games with the other person

The joystick button "Games" next to the emoji button invites the other person to play transfer Durak, checkers or chess right in the chat. See Games in chats.

Editing and pins

Right-click a message on a computer or long-press it on a phone. Edit lets you change your own text message within 48 hours. Saved changes show an “edited” label. Cancelling an edit restores your previous draft.

Pin adds a message to the pinned list and preserves previous pins. Click the bar above the conversation to jump to a message and cycle through the pins. The counter shows the selected position. All pinned messages opens the full list; select an entry to jump to it in the chat history. Unpin removes only the selected pin. Direct-chat pins are shared by both participants. In groups and channels, owners and administrators can pin and unpin messages.

Reactions and message actions

Right-click a message (long-press on a phone) to open its menu. The top row holds reactions. You can add up to three reactions to one message; hover a reaction to see who added it.

  • "Forward" — Saved Messages is first in the list of targets. The "Hide sender name" checkbox sends the copy without the "Forwarded message" label.
  • "Copy link" — a link to this message; whoever opens it lands right on it.
  • "Info" (for your own messages) — when the message was sent, delivered, read and edited.
  • Click the "edited" label under a message to open "Edit history" with every version of the text.

While the other person records a voice or video message, you see "recording voice…" or "recording video…" above the field.

On a phone the menu has the same reactions, "Forward" and "Select" for acting on several messages. Swipe a message to the left to reply.

Formatting, links and mentions

Just like in Telegram: select text in the message field and a formatting bar appears above it with Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Monospace, Spoiler, Quote, Link and Plain text (removes formatting). For Link, paste the address and press Enter — the selected words become a link.

The same actions with the keyboard:

Keys Action
Ctrl+B bold
Ctrl+I italic
Ctrl+U underline
Ctrl+Shift+X strikethrough
Ctrl+Shift+M monospace (several lines become a code block)
Ctrl+Shift+P spoiler
Ctrl+Shift+. quote
Ctrl+K link
Ctrl+Shift+N plain text

Pressing again removes the style. Styles can be combined: bold italic, a link inside a quote and so on.

You can also type the markup yourself:

  • **text** for bold, __text__ or *text* for italic;
  • ++text++ for underline, ~~text~~ for strikethrough;
  • text between backticks for monospace, between triple backticks for a code block with a Copy button;
  • ||text|| for a spoiler revealed by clicking;
  • [words](https://address) for a link behind words;
  • a line starting with > for a quote.

Links remain clickable. When a website provides a title, description and image, a preview card appears below the message. Messages containing one to three emoji display in a larger size.

In a group, type @ and choose a member from the suggestions, or type their address: @username. The mentioned member receives a notification linking to the message.

The pinned list and navigation are sorted by the date messages were sent in the conversation. Pins cycle from bottom to top: newest message first, then older messages, returning to the newest after the oldest. The order in which messages were pinned does not affect navigation.

Silent and scheduled messages

Click the arrow beside Send. Send silently sends text without a sound alert for the recipient. Send later lets you select a date and time, optionally sending silently. You can schedule up to 100 text messages, up to one year ahead.

The sender can view and cancel these in Scheduled messages. At delivery time the server checks permissions again. If the recipient has closed messaging or you have left the group, the message is not sent and the list shows “Could not send”.

Video messages and keyboard shortcuts

Video notes appear without a rectangular message bubble, so the chat background remains visible around the circle.

Drag the white dot around the ring or click a position on the ring to seek. Progress moves smoothly. When the ring has keyboard focus, arrow keys seek by 5 seconds; Home and End jump to the start and end.

Video notes stay circular during playback. Click to play or pause: the ring shows progress and the remaining time appears at the bottom.

When the field is empty, one recording button appears on the right. Tap to switch between microphone and camera; the selected mode is saved on your device. Hold to record and release to send. Slide left to cancel or up to lock recording without holding. Locked recording offers pause, resume, delete and send; Esc cancels. With keyboard focus on the button, Enter or Space starts a locked recording.

Video notes require camera and microphone permission; voice notes require the microphone. Video notes allow up to 60 seconds, voice notes up to 10 minutes; recording sends automatically at the limit. Paused time is excluded from the duration. This works in direct and group chats.

Voice messages have a circular play button and a waveform for seeking. A compact player appears at the top of the chat with the author, time, pause and queue controls. Click the speed button to toggle 1×/2×; right-click, long-press or press Arrow Down to choose a speed from 0.5× to 2×. Progress moves smoothly and the next voice message plays automatically. Close stops playback.

With a hardware keyboard:

  • ↑ in an empty composer edits your latest eligible text message;
  • Ctrl+↑ / Ctrl+↓ selects a message to reply to;
  • Esc in the composer cancels replying or editing;
  • Ctrl+F searches the whole chat history (see Search, folders and calls);
  • Ctrl+B / Ctrl+I / Ctrl+U and more format text (see the table above);
  • Enter sends; Shift+Enter starts a new line.
